These vintage opera glasses are mate from Bakelite and are marked A. Sutain. They were made in the 1960's and objects like this, especially ones made by A. Sutain are getting harder to find and are very collectible.
A. Sutain is an American company that produced quality, chic and trendy jewelery in the early 1950's. In the 1960's, A.A. Sutain LTD. was a sunglass company based in Manhattan, selling plastic frames with optically ground lenses. Some of their frames included floral, glitter, jewels and novelty designs. It is believed that A. Sutain and A.A. Sutain LTD. were the same company, but because they are somewhat rare, not much more is known about the maker. A. Sutain is considered to be on of the very first makers of designer sunglasses.
This particular pair was once attached at the end of the handle, and is no longer attached there (see images) but it does not detract in any way from the appearance or the utility of these glasses.
These glasses are called Lorgnette glasses, as they are lenses with an attached handle as to which you use to hold up against your face.
If you use reading glasses, imagine how fun it would be to keep these in your purse and make a statement while reading your menu with such an unusual item! They are embellished with tiny crystal gems around the lenses, and the lenses are in mint condition as well. Very Holly Golightly!
